Surrounded by rolling green hills dotted with horses and cows, the town of Waimea on Hawaii’s Big Island is a peaceful and friendly place. One afternoon, while staying with friends at their house there, my husband and I decided to go for a 36 along the many, mostly traffic-free, country lanes in the area.
We met a beautiful Golden Retriever. He seemed 37 friendly so we stopped to play with him, 38 a stick which he retrieved(取回) several times happily. When we 39 our walk, he followed us, and although I worried that he 40 be going too far from his home, I couldn’t deny that we were enjoying his 41 .
After about twenty minutes, we found ourselves walking along a dirt road in an unfamiliar area. One house, almost hidden by shrubbery(灌木林) and shaded by tall trees, seemed 42 strange. I felt an urge to be as far away from that place as possible.
Just then, the door to the house creaked open and five dogs 43 , barking and growling(咆哮)as they ran toward us. I felt 44 and couldn’t move. There was nowhere to 45 and no time to run..
All of a sudden, our new friend appeared between the dogs and us. He faced them – all five of them – growling and baring his teeth. I was 46 to see the attacking dogs stop in their tracks ten feet away from him. Our protector 47 them there while we escaped. 48 a safe distance, we looked back and saw the five dogs 49 back toward their house.
But the Golden Retriever was 50 in sight. I felt an ache in my 51 ; I missed our friend already. Instinctively, I knew he was not hurt. With a feeling of 52 , we made our way back to the house, 53 the whole way that we would see him again. But it was not to be.

第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从短文后每题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Since the beginning of the year, smog has covered parts of North China. In January, Beijing saw only five days without smog. The rising PM 2.5 readings terrified many people, and some health experts said that whenever the smog gets serious, hospitals receive more patients suffering acute respiratory(呼吸系统)and heart diseases.
Later, news of polluted underground water in some provinces scared people who wondered whether the water they drink is safe.
So the need to emphasize environmental protection while developing the economy is heard everywhere. Smog especially is a common concern. Like a popular online post said, air may be the only thing that is equal for everyone, despite your income or vocation. People with higher incomes are able to drink only bottled spring water and eat only organic food by paying higher prices, but they breathe the same air as everyone else.
At a meeting on Monday, many Representatives have expressed their concerns about the air quality, too. One talked about his experience in Beijing. ―After taking a taxi from the capital airport to my hotel, which took about an hour, I washed my nose and found the inside of my nose was black. We should ask ourselves this question: Why do we want to develop? It's for living a better life. Dirty air is definitely not a better life,\" he said.
China needs to develop its economy and invest in high-tech. Every Chinese wants a strong country. But without blue sky, clean water and safe food, the achievements in the economy will become meaningless. Space technologies are not to be developed for building a base on Mars so that one day all human beings can migrate to the red planet because they have destroyed Earth.
What the public wants is a strong and beautiful China. President Hu Jintao spoke at the 18th Party Congress last November saying that great efforts must be made to promote ecological progress and build a beautiful China. The words have shown the central government's resolution to address the environment issue. 56.The effect of smog doesn’t include . A.the rising of PM 2.5 readings B.the increase of people’s income C.more people suffering diseases D.patients increased in hospital 57.Why has smog become a common concern?
A.Because people have to pay higher prices. B.Because we have to develop industry.
C.Because nobody can avoid it. D.Because a popular online-post discussed it. 58.To make China stronger we have to develop economy, but .
A.we have to sacrifice air as the price B.the smog is the only byproduct C.ecological progress can be ignored D.the dirty air is not what we want 59.The underlined word ―they‖ in paragraph 6 refers to .
A.space technologies B.other plants C.human beings D.industrial development 60.From the last two paragraphs we can infer that .
A.we must protect the environment while developing economy B.space technologies should be developed in a large scale C.we can move to the Mars after the earth has been destroyed D.high-tech can completely solve the problem of pollution

BEIJING, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Scientists from China and the United States have mapped a key genetic code for bread wheat, a discovery that will help improve the crop's productivity and ability to withstand extreme conditions.
The sequence(测序) and draft of the A genome, one of the three basic genomes of wheat, was published on the website of the journal Nature on Monday. Researchers present this major achievement, by analysis of the genome of wheat T. urartu, the contributor of the A genome, to show its structure and characteristics.
The identification of around 38,000 wheat genes is expected to help provide a valuable resource to accelerate deeper genomic breeding studies and offer a new foundation for the study of wheat evolution and genetic improvement.
The research, started by a team from the Institute of Genetics and Development Biology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was conducted by Shenzhen-based BGI, a leading genomics organization, and the University of California, Davis.
Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) is one of the most widely planted and eaten food crops in the world. It feeds about 40 percent of the world's population and provides 20 percent of a human's daily suggested amounts of calories and protein. Major efforts are underway around the world to increase the crop's output and quality by multiplying genetic differences and fight against cold, drought and disease.
However, the extremely large size and polyploid(多倍体) complexity of the wheat genome have so far acted as solid barriers for researchers to gain insight into its biology and evolution. 61. This passage is mainly about ____.
A. wheat’s influence and contribution to the world B. the barriers in wheat’s genetic study C. scientists unlock key genome of wheat D.the aim of wheat’s genetic study
62. The underlined word “accelerate” in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to _________. A. put off B. go up C. speed up D. hold off
63. The identification of wheat genes is supposed to do the following EXCEPT_________. A. to increase its ability to survive in nature.
B. to increase its output to feed more population as much as possible. C. to contribute to the development of its biology and evolution. D. to meet humans’ daily need of calories and protein.
64. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.Wheat’s genetic study has been carried out smoothly. B.Wheat’s genetic study has advanced significantly.
C.Wheat’s genetic study has little effect on resistance to natural conditions. D.All the genomes of wheat have been mapped successfully. 65. Where probably can you see this passage?
A. In a novel B.On a website C. In a lab D. In a storybook

The video rooms have been open since Jan. 2. If successful, the chain hopes to expand the service to other provinces, or even other countries. In addition to the food, customers pay 200 yuan per hour for using the room.
''The video rooms have been fully booked in February,'' said Chen Yu, manager of the Wangfujing branch. The Video room in Beijing is about 30 square meters and large enough for six customers.
''Many customers prefer to use the room for dinners rather than lunch,'' Chen said, adding the average age of customers who booked the video hotpot(火锅) is about 30.
''The whole process is very smooth. The image and the voice transmission(转换) are as good as those of video conferencing at work, ''said one of Chen's colleagues surnamed Luo.
''I have a lot of friends in Beijing, whom I haven’t met for a long time because of being busy at work,'' said a woman surnamed Yu who is having dinner with her husband at Haidilao.
''The new service gives us a chance to have a dinner together without traveling. I would like to give it a try.''
The video hotpot also helped establish a friendship between waitresses in the two cities.
Zhao Huanhuan, in her 20s, who is specially trained for serving in the video room in Shanghai, developed a friendship with a waitress named Lu Ke in the Beijing branch.
Zhao said excitedly: ''It was too amazing to believe. I'm so interested in using the special room and enjoy serving people there. I also talk about some interesting interactive games with Lu before guests come for dinner''.
Although Lu felt a little bit nervous when she first served in front of the screens, she said the new mode of communication also encouraged her to supply better services for customers.
''It's like a service competition. We saw each other through video and I could learn from Zhao's serving,'' Lu said, adding she will visit Zhao if she goes to Shanghai.
It seems that video hotpot doesn't satisfy everyone's taste, however. 66. From the passage we know that ______.
A. the video room service has been open for a long time
B. the video room service has been open in many provinces in China C. the Video room in Beijing is only designed for six people to use D. using the video room, you have to pay extra 200 yuan per hour 67. Haidilao may be the name of ______. A. a theatre B. a cinema C. a restaurant D. a hotel 68. Why do many customers choose the video room service? A. Because the service there is excellent.
B. Because the room is large enough for six people. C. Because the food there is delicious.
D. Because they can have dinner with friends without traveling. 69. We can learn from the passage that Zhao Huanhuan ______. A. is twenty years old now
B. hasn't met Lu Ke for a long time C. enjoys communicating with Lu Ke D. learned a lot from Lu Ke
70. What do you suppose will be talked about in the paragraph to be followed? A. Other customers' complaint about the service. B. Other customers' praise for the service. C. How to improve the service. D. Lu's visit to Zhao in Shanghai.

Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence, \"In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence\". Given that this is the ease, why aren't students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive ears, or stay physically fit?
First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult. For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isn't in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.
Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict
3
resolution: stay calm. Once the student feels calmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well Rude words, namecalling, and accusations only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control.
After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy for conflict resolution : listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speaker's position. Then the two people should change roles.
Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. This doesn't mean trying to figure out what's wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesn't, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution.
There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesn't mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility, ―64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation; and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves‖. Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country. 71. This article is mainly about ________.
A. how to deal with school conflicts B. the cause of arguments in schools C. how to analyze youth violence D. the lives of school children
72. From Paragraph 2 we can learn that ________.
A. violence is more likely to occur at lunchtime B. students tend to lose their temper easily C. a small conflict can lead to violence
D. the eating habit of a student is often the cause of a fight
73. Why do students need to ask themselves the questions stated in Paragraph 5?
A. To make clear what the real issue is. B. To get ready to try new things. C. To find out who is to blame. D. To figure out how to stop the shouting match.
74. After the conflict resolution program was started in Atlanta, it was found that ________.
A. the teacher-student relationship greatly improved B. there was less student cooperation in the classroom C. more teachers felt better about themselves in schools D. there was a decrease in classroom violence
75. The writer's purpose for writing this article is to ________.
A. complain about problems in school education B. advocate teaching conflict management in schools C. teach students different strategies for school life D. inform teachers of the latest studies on school violence
[1]At the beginning of the twentieth century, many people thought that the American family was falling apart. A century later, we know that this was not the case. However, although the family is still alive in the United States, its size and shape were very different 100 years ago.
[2]In the late 1800s and early 1900s, there were mainly two types of families in the United States: the extended and the nuclear. The extended family usually includes grandparents, parents, and children living under the same roof. The nuclear family consists of only parents and children.Today there are many different kinds of families. Some people live in ―traditional‖ families, that is, a stay-home mother, a working father, and their own biological children. Others live in two-paycheck families, single-parent families, adoptive or foster families and so on.
[3]What caused the structure of the family to change? In the 1930s and 1940s, many families faced serious financial problems during the Great Depression and women were choosing to go to college and take jobs outside the home. As a result, the birthrate began to fall and the divorce rate began to rise. During World War II (1939-1945),5 million women were left alone to take care of their homes and their children. ___________________, thousands of their wives had to go to work outside their home.
[4]During the next ten years, the situation changed. There were fewer divorces, and people married at a younger age and had more children than the previous generation. It was unusual for a mother to work outside the home during the years when her children were growing up. The traditional family seemed to be returning.
[5]In the years between 1960s and 1990s, there were many important changes in the structure of the family. The divorce rate doubled and the birthrate fell by half. The number of single-parent families doubled, and the number of couples living together without being married doubled again. If we can judge from history, however, this will probably change again in the twenty-first century. 76.What is the title of the passage ? ( no more than 8 words)
